Thompson Playa del Carmen, a 92-room boutique hotel that opened in downtown Playa del Carmen, Mexico, last November, has just opened its sister property a few blocks away on the beach. The 27-room luxury Beach House, a villa-style venue available for buyouts, provides a more intimate setting for weddings, special events, retreats and the like. The new property has nine guest rooms and 18 suites, each with a private balcony and ocean views.

The 1950s-inspired retreat features traditional Mexican materials, such as hand-pressed tiles, stone and whitewashed wood paneling. A private pool lined with cabanas is available exclusively to Beach House guests, who also are permitted to use the rooftop pool at the main hotel. Beach chairs are offered as well.

A casual beachfront restaurant, C Grill, is on-site. Led by executive chef Pedro Abascal, who also heads up CATCH -- the popular rooftop restaurant atop the main hotel -- C Grill offers light Mediterranean-inspired dishes using local ingredients.

The Beach House offers complimentary bicycles, stand-up paddle boards, and fitness classes such as yoga and boot camp, as well as access to water sports such as snorkeling, diving and jet skiing. In the evenings, the hotel offers beachfront entertainment including music, sangria and ceviche happy hour, plus "dive-in" movies.
