Hong Kong-based Shangri-La Hotels & Resorts is upping its sales game with a new virtual reality tool -- Samsung Gear VR headsets powered by Oculus, which will showcase videos of the hotel company's properties. Currently nearly half of its 94 hotels have the headsets, but the brand expects to have a full rollout across its portfolio by January 2016, including its 17 global sales offices. In addition, the Gear VR headsets will be used as promotional and educational tools at tradeshows and industry events and client sales meetings.

The Oculus Gear VR headsets will enable meeting planners, travel planners and potential corporate clients who visit the Shangri-La booth at trade shows to experience the portfolio of hotels and destinations around the world. "Shangri-La is investing significantly in technology and the future of travel content, which is why we are embracing virtual reality on this scale," said Steven Taylor, chief marketing officer of Shangri-La International Hotel Management Ltd., in a statement announcing the new sales tool. "VR is a revolutionary new sales tool. The technology has evolved so that it is now affordable, light and portable; virtual reality is on the cusp of becoming more mainstream."
