The first phase of the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre will debut Aug. 15 in the capital city, Muscat. At the opening, the new facility will offer nearly 238,000 square feet of exhibit space. The second phase, a convention center that seats 3,200 attendees, will be unveiled in late 2017. Among the business sectors the country will target for events are energy, agriculture, fishing and health. According to the Ministry of Tourism, 120 "local champions" who can influence meetings in these sectors will work to attract meetings to Oman.

In related news, the Oman Convention & Visitors Bureau was launched last month to support the country's growing meetings business. Hotel expansion in Muscat also is on the rise: The capital will add 10,500 guest rooms to its inventory by 2018.
