Facebook is acquiring the social geo-location company Gowalla, according to a Gowalla blog post on Monday. Gowalla had been Foursquare's primary competitor in the geo-location technology space. Facebook is acquiring Gowalla's team and technology, and the Gowalla service will be winding down at the end of January, according to co-founder Josh Williams. Facebook will not acquire Gowalla's user data, according to Williams, who promises Gowalla users an easy way to export photos, Passport, Stamp and Pin data before the service closes. Facebook has yet to define how Gowalla's technology might be integrated into its platform.
