Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has formed a task force of tourism officials and business leaders to help the state's struggling tourism industry, following the numerous meeting and visitor cancellations in protest of SB 1070, the state law that requires state and local police to determine the immigration status of people who have been arrested or detained. The task force is set to convene later this week; further details on members and funding will be among the items to be determined. In an update, a spokesperson for the Arizona Hotel & Lodging Association, which will be part of the task force, told M&C that the confirmed number of cancellations to date still stands at 23, though the association estimates they could be as high as 40. "The real issue is that we'll never know how much potential business we will lose," she said, adding that the group has heard from hotel sales departments that some clients are refusing to take their calls.
