Caesars Entertainment today issued a statement in opposition of Mississippi's passage this week of House Bill 1523, a controversial law that allows public and private businesses to refuse service to the LGBT and transgender community, and even single mothers, based on a business owner's religious beliefs. (Read our prior coverage here.)

The statement reads as follows:

"Caesar's is disappointed with the new Mississippi law, which pits religious rights against equal protection for the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) community. We respect our country's long history of religious freedom. However, that freedom shouldn't be used to legislatively discriminate against LGBT people, who include our employees and customers. And, that law will not promote economic growth and tourism in the state."

Caesars has nearly 40 properties in 20 destinations.
