According to the Associated Press and other media outlets, the U.S. Justice Department has filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Arizona’s SB 1070, the law that requires state and local police to determine the immigration status of those who have been arrested or detained. The federal lawsuit was filed yesterday in U.S. District Court in Phoenix. In the document, the government contends that the state’s law, set to go into effect July 29, violates the supremacy clause of the Constitution.
