Three U.S. cities -- Austin, Detroit and Tucson -- have been recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizaton. UNESCO's Creative Cities Network -- launched in 2004 "to foster international cooperation with and between cities committed to investing in creativity as a driver for sustainable urban development, social inclusion and cultural vibrance" -- designated 47 cities from 33 countries as new members this year (listed below). Of the U.S. cities, Austin was recognized for media arts, Detroit for design and Tucson for gastronomy.

Following are new members of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in these seven designated creative fields: Crafts and Folk Art, Design, Film, Gastronomy, Literature, Media Arts and Music.
