Michael Polese

General Manager, Westminster Hotel, Livingston, N.J.

That Michael Polese, general manager of the 183-room Westminster Hotel for the past eight years, is so enamoured of all things tech is the result of a background that includes a stint as support manager/applications trainer for Edison, N.J.-based Ramesys, where he helped implement hospitality technology solutions at more than 60 hotels and military bases around the world. Polese recently took some time out of his busy day to talk with M&C.

What's new at the Westminster? I'm most excited about our recent wireless network upgrade, which now supports maximum speeds of 100 Mbps for downloads and 20 Mbps for uploads. I believe that, today, high-speed Internet access is among the most important components necessary for a well-run meeting, and I recommend planners fully understand their needs in this regard.

What's the best advice you could give a planner?
When you come to us -- or any hotel -- on a site inspection, let a savvy hotel representative guide you. Too often I see planners do inspections on their own, in a vacuum, so to speak. You'll get so much more out of the visit with the help of a seasoned professional at the property who can best explain what's possible.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love the theater and the arts in general, and I recently wrote the music and lyrics for a one-man musical called Picture Incomplete. It was written by and stars my partner, Trent Armand Kendall, and will be playing this month as part of the New York Musical Theater Festival.

How do your musical interests inform your hotel work?
Managing the hotel is a lot like theater. It's like being on stage, acting, performing and delivering night after night.
