To celebrate the long-awaited opening of the commuter light-rail line from Denver International Airport to downtown's Union Station today, rides will be free on the University of Colorado A line from noon to 9 p.m. and on all rail lines from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, and local parties will be held at several stations along the A line from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Gov. John Hickenlooper, a former Denver mayor, will be on hand Friday morning for the grand opening ceremony and celebration. Construction on the line began in August 2010.

The 23-mile, 40-minute ride to and from the airport from any station on the new line costs $9; more local trips are $2.60 for 1-2 fare zones and $4.50 for three or more fare zones.
