This week, members of Unite Here Local 1 in Chicago are protesting the nomination of Penny Pritzker, a Hyatt Hotels and Resorts heir and director for the company, on the eve of her confirmation hearing to the post of Commerce Secretary, which will take place tomorrow. Demonstrating outside the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place, the workers are protesting a four-year wage freeze from the lack of a contract, which has been stalled by negotiation troubles. In a statement, Hyatt said, "To get publicity for its campaign, Unite Here has targeted Hyatt board members and spread misinformation about Hyatt associates' workplace experience. Our associates in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Waikiki have endured nearly four years without a wage increase because Unite Here leaders won't allow our associates to vote on new contracts unless Hyatt agrees to impose unionization on employees at other Hyatt hotels."
