Marriott hotel employees in Hawaii and Detroit have joined the strike that began last week in Boston and the California cities of San Francisco, San Jose, San Diego and Oakland. That brings the total number of striking Marriott workers to about 7,700, all of whom are represented by the Unite Here hospitality-workers union.
The Detroit work stoppage affects only one hotel, the Westin Book Cadillac. The strike is occurring at five hotels in Hawaii: the Moana Surfider, a Westin Resort; the Royal Hawaiian; the Sheraton Maui Hotel; the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani, and the Sheraton Waikiki. The total number of affected hotels is now 23.

"Today, 7,700 Unite Here workers are on strike across Marriott hotels in eight tourism destinations to change the hospitality industry and demand that one job be enough to support their families," said D. Taylor, international president of Unite Here. "I could not be more proud of the courage and solidarity of Unite Here hotel workers today, for stepping up to fight for a better life for themselves, their families and all hotel workers across the industry. Marriott is the richest and most profitable hotel company in the world, and by taking them on in this historic hotel worker strike, Unite Here union members are going to change the lives of all workers in our industry."

"We are disappointed that Unite Here has chosen to resort to a strike at this time," a Marriott spokesperson said last week when the strike began. "During the strike our hotels are open, and we stand ready to provide excellent service to our guests. While we respect our associates' rights to participate in this work stoppage, we also will welcome any associate who chooses to continue to work."

A labor dispute could still occur at the Westin Seattle as well. A current list of striking Marriott hotels can be found here.

In Chicago, only two hotels remain affected by the strike that spread last month to 26 hotels across the city: the Cambria Magnificent Mile and the Kinzie Hotel. Chicago strike updates can be found here.
