The new Galveston Island Convention Center at The San Luis broke ground in November 2002. Upon opening in spring 2004, the venue will offer 55,000 square feet of meeting and exhibit space and a 15,000-square-foot ballroom. The event marked the start of a revitalization project along Seawall Boulevard, where other plans call for the expansion of the Hilton Galveston Island Resort and a new Rainforest Cafe and Retail Village.

Construction on an $800 million, 800,000-square-foot expansion to McCormick Place should begin this winter and finish by 2007, pushing the total space to more than 3 million square feet. Nearby Soldier Field is getting a $606 million facelift.

On the hotel front, the 415-room Sofitel Chicago Water Tower opened last June, and the $72 million, 295-room Doral Eaglewood Conference Resort & Spa debuted in October. Opening this summer: the 385-room Hard Rock Hotel Chicago.
