Adding Rooms, Space
In the first nine months of 2008, seven new hotels, totaling 2,195 guest rooms, opened here; eight more properties are being built, set to open by 2010. This follows the July 2007 debut of McCormick Place West, with 460,000 square feet of exhibit space. O'Hare International Airport is undergoing a $15 billion expansion, to finish by 2014.
Hotel: Mona Lisa Suite Hotel. Opened: August. Rooms: 240. Meeting space: 10,000 square feet (at the nearby Stetson University Conference Center). Key features: the 150-seat Galerie Restaurant & Bar, an infinity-edged pool and free transportation to the Walt Disney theme parks, two miles away.
Hotel: The Fairmont Chicago. Renovations completed: August. Price tag: $50 million. Rooms: 687. Meeting space: 62,000 square feet. Key changes: new and expanded guest rooms; a new wine, cheese and chocolate tasting room called ENO, and a new 11,000-square-foot spa.
Hotel: The Palmer House. Restoration completed: September. Price tag: $170 million. Rooms: 1,639. Meeting space: 130,000 square feet. Key changes: a new restaurant and bar, a new 8,000-square-foot spa, completely remodeled meeting space and the new 3,400-square-foot Honoré Ballroom.
Hotel: Hilton Baltimore Convention Center Hotel. Opened: August. Price tag: $301 million. Rooms: 757. Meeting space: 60,000 square feet. Key features: two ballrooms, spanning 25,000 and 15,000 square feet, respectively, and the new Diamond Tavern.
Hotel: The W Minneapolis–The Foshay. Opened: August. Rooms: 229. Meeting space: 6,700 square feet. Key features: two restaurants, the Prohibition Bar, a fitness center, in-room spa treatments and the Living Room lobby lounge.
Hotel: Raleigh Marriott City Center. Opened: August. Rooms: 400. Meeting space: 15,000 square feet. Key features: the Posta Tuscan Grille and Bar Posta, each serving Italian food; a Starbucks café, and access to the adjacent 500,000-square-foot Raleigh Convention Center.
NJ, Mount Laurel
Hotel: Westin Mount Laurel. Opened: August. Rooms: 180. Meeting space: 25,000 square feet. Key features: Westin Heavenly Beds in all guest rooms; an indoor pool; a fitness center; and the Bellagio Ristorante, with a private dining area seating 20.
OK, Oklahoma City
Hotel: Renaissance Oklahoma City Convention Center Hotel. Renovations completed: August. Price tag: $4.5 million. Rooms: 311. Meeting space: 66,000 square feet. Key changes: new soft goods, flat-screen TVs and décor in guest rooms, and a new lounge in the lobby.
Hotel: Crowne Plaza Portland–Downtown (formerly a Holiday Inn). Renovations completed: August. Price tag: $3 million. Rooms: 241. Meeting space: 10,000 square feet. Key changes: a new lobby, upgraded furniture, complimentary Wi-Fi, a fitness center and an indoor pool.
Hotel: Tulalip Resort Casino. Opened: August. Price tag: $130 million. Rooms: 370. Meeting space: 30,000 square feet. Key features: a total of 192,000 square feet of gaming space, the 2,600-seat Tulalip Amphitheatre, six restaurants and a 14,000-square-foot spa.
