Mexico’s Senate approved a measure on Oct. 30 that will institute a US$5 per person tax on cruise passengers who visit Mexican ports. It is estimated the tax will generate US$30 million a year in revenue, with 80 percent earmarked for maintaining and improving the infrastructure in the country’s port communities. The charge goes into effect as of June 1, 2008.

Hilton bested Marriott for the right to build a $398.2 million, 1,000-room headquarters hotel to support the Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale. The property, projected to open in mid-2011, will feature 74,000 square feet of meeting space and be connected to the convention center by an elevated walkway.

The Las Vegas Convention Center broke ground in October on a new $16.8 million Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department substation on its campus. According to FBI statistics released that same month, violent crime rose 32 percent in the city and unincorporated Clark County over 2005. The national average amounted to a 1 percent increase per 100,000 residents.
