Meetings & Conventions: Newsline
In Brief
  • STARWOOD HOTELS & RESORTS named two executives to head up its W Hotels brand. Steve Marx, formerly with Kimpton Hotels, is now senior vice president of hotel operations. Ross Klein, formerly at Polo Brands, is chief marketing officer.
  • DISCOUNTING IS NOT THE WAY to improve hotel revenues, revealed an April study by Cornell University’s Center for Hospitality Research. In most markets, slashing prices failed to boost demand, and inconsistent Web pricing only encouraged bargain shopping.
  • ONLINE MEETS BRICK-AND-MORTAR. Expedia Corporate Travel has begun offering a “Custom Service Level” for companies that want a team of flesh-and-blood agents dedicated to their account. Other offline services include an international desk and an executive service level.
  • CARNIVAL CRUISE LINES introduced a new price guarantee for group bookings: If published prices fall below a group’s quoted rate, Carnival will provide the difference to passengers in the form of a shipboard credit. Some restrictions apply.
