The Hawaii State Legislature voted last month to override Gov. Linda Lingle's veto of a 1 percentage point increase in the state's hotel room tax. Effective July 1, the tax will be 8.25 percent, and it will rise by another point, to 9.25 percent, on July 1, 2010.
Walt Disney Parks and Resorts purchased a 15-acre plot in the National Harbor, Md., waterfront resort development near Washington, D.C., on May 19 for $11 million. Disney is considering building a stand-alone resort hotel on the site. National Harbor currently has six hotels totalling 3,000 rooms, including the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center.
Southwest Airlines, despite a loss of $91 million in the first quarter of 2009, is moving into markets that have been dominated by low-cost rival JetBlue, such as Boston and New York City.
Justice family group LLC bought the 721-room Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., in May for a reported $20 million, surprising Marriott International, which had agreed to buy the hotel.
