When news hit recently that the 2,000-room New York Hilton Midtown will stop offering room service next month (see our news story at, many travelers were shocked to think such a major hotel would cease to offer that luxury. Some consider it a "must," but room service has become a less profitable revenue stream for hotels in recent years, according to statistics from PKF Hospitality Research. The chart below shows how total U.S. hotel room service revenue, in dollars per occupied room, has trended since 2007.
