Meetings & Conventions: Newsline
While much of this issue was completed before the Sept. 11 tragedies, Newsline was updated at press time to reflect recent events.
  • THE HOTEL INDUSTRY is expected to suffer deeply. PricewaterhouseCoopers analysts said the predicted 3.5 percent decline in REVPAR growth for 2001 will fall further due to an expected dramatic decline in business and leisure travel.
  • THE INTERNATIONAL AIR TRANSPORT ASSOCIATION predicted the international airline community will lose $10 billion due to reduced air travel worldwide and in the United States. The previous forecast had been $6 billion.
  • THE BUSINESS TRAVEL COALITION surveyed 187 corporate travel and purchasing managers after the disaster. Nearly 90 percent expected cutbacks in employee travel in the coming weeks. Fifty-six percent of those surveyed said their confidence in the security of the U.S. aviation system had eroded “very significantly.”
