Among ships serving the latter category is the Wind Surf, a five-masted member of the Windstar Cruises line (www.wind The 308-passenger vessel plies the Caribbean and travels to Mayreau, a speck of an island in the Grenadines and home to a mere 200 people.

Another stop: Dominica, where explorers can wander through lush rainforests or simply bask in the sun.
