Serving ballpark eats at a gathering is a great way to save money. Elevate the event by pairing burgers, pizza and the like with low-cost wines. Carolyn Evans Hammond, author of Good Better Best Wines, recommends the following:
• With cheeseburgers, serve the Trapiche Broquel Malbec from Argentina ($14). Notes of grilled beef in this full-bodied wine help it stand up to the burger.
• With pizza, serve Citra Montepulciano d’Abruzzo from Italy ($6). The acidity of this wine matches the tomato sauce in pizza, and the hints of peppercorn and black olive complement the dish.
• With tomato soup, serve Bella Sera Chianti from Italy ($10). The subtle flavors of sea salt and white pepper in this medium-bodied wine help season any style of tomato soup.
