Chardonnay is making a comeback, according to Max Kiebach, sommelier and director of food and beverage at the Inn at Virginia Tech ( He says that today's popular labels, like Kendall-Jackson's K-J Avant Chardonnay,  don't have that "oakiness" that plagued the varietal in the past. Chardonnay also is affordable, with most bottles costing under $20.
