The Tides Inn, on an inlet off the Rappahannock River in Irvington, Va., excels in teaching people how to handle a wind-powered craft. Premier Sailing takes up to 16 guests (and can handle a group of 32 split in half) out on a Catalina 30 or a J24 sailboat to earn their U.S. Sailing Basic Keelboat certificate. As part of the course, participants become more comfortable with steering the boat, trimming the sails, learning how to pick up a person who's fallen overboard, docking with confidence and more.

If your group isn't so adventurous and would just like to relax on the water, the property's electric Duffy Boats hold 10 people and the pontoon cruiser seats 12.
