0809VABOX1 SheratonThe 320-room Sheraton Roa­noke Hotel & Conference Center reopened in April after an $18 million renovation. The hotel had been the Roanake Plaza before being re-flagged as a Sheraton. It has 17,000 square feet of meeting space. (540) 563-9300; starwoodhotels.com

The 410-room Richmond Marriott is undergoing a $14 million renovation set to finish in September. All guest rooms have been overhauled, the lobby has been transformed into Marriott's signature Great Room, and the upscale T-Miller's Sports Bar and Grill is being added. The property has 26,427 square feet of meeting space and is connected by skywalk to the Greater Richmond Convention Center. The Marriott will complete its revamp in concert with the opening of Richmond CenterStage (richmondcenterstage.com), a performing arts center across the street that includes the renovated landmark Carpenter Theatre (with 1,800 seats) and the new Dorothy Pauley Square, comprising the 200-seat Gottwald Playhouse, the 150-seat Rhythm Hall and the Showcase Gallery for visual arts. All can be rented out by groups.

Old Town Newcomer

0809VABOX3 LorienKimpton's new luxury boutique Lorien Hotel & Spa opened in Old Town Alexandria in February. All 107 rooms feature tall, trellis-like headboards and quaint clawfoot bathtubs.
