running shoeFrom Jan. 19-23, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts will collect new or "gently used" running shoes from planners, guests and anyone else and donate them to the nonprofit group Soles4Souls (, which distributes footwear to those in need. Fairmont's partner, shoe/apparel giant Adidas, will reward each donor with a special discount card, good for 15 percent off online purchases.

The shoe drive is part of a larger Fairmont charity initiative. Last summer Fairmont launched Meetings That Matter, a program that allows groups to direct 10 percent of their total bill toward a charity of their choice. (Any group using 50 or more room nights is eligible for the program.) Planners who feel in need of charity, given the current recession, are also in luck: That 10 percent can be put toward a future Fairmont meeting, instead.
