Short Cuts:

WORKING SOLO AND WORKING SOLO SOURCEBOOK by Terri Lonier, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., New York City, $14.95 each
This powerful pair of books for the solo entrepreneur, first published in 1994, has been updated to reflect changes in the growing world of self-employment. Working Solo is a comprehensive, user-friendly how-to manual, with 13 chapters that cover everything from choosing a business to celebrating your success. The sister Sourcebook lists books, Web sites, universities, government agencies, technology suppliers and hundreds of other resources for independent business owners.

THE PERILS OF PARTNERS by Irwin Gray, Smith-Johnson Publishers, Flushing, N.Y., $18.95
The subtitle "How to Protect Yourself Against Crooked, Conniving and Incompetent Partners" suggests the author may be writing from experience. Whatever the impetus, his book provides scenarios for every possible way a partner might undermine a business, with advice on preventing such problems, coping with them or putting out fires after the fact, depending on what stage of partnership peril the reader is experiencing.
