Short Cuts:

THE SPIRIT TO SERVE by J.W. Marriott Jr. and Kathi Ann Brown, HarperBusiness, New York City, $25

In his 40 years at the heart of the hotel empire, Bill Marriott has learned a thing or two. This book offers a plain-spoken account of those lessons, including attention to detail, treating employees well and fostering teamwork. Be prepared for statements like: "Much of what you've read so far in this book might lead you to assume that everyone at Marriott always works cheerfully and unfailingly for the good of the whole. In general, that's remarkably true."

AUGUSTINE'S TRAVELS by Norman R. Augustine, AMACOM, New York City, $24.95

For five cents less than Marriott's book, the chairman of Lockheed Martin Corporation spins an engaging tale of "life, business and what it takes to succeed at both." Augustine puts ethics at the root of his message, and branches into topics ranging from career management to mergers and acquisitions. With colorful anecdotes and lots of name-dropping, this reads more like a novel than a management tome.
