At Last, the Euro Arrives
It’s farewell to the drachma, guilder and peseta, and hello to
the euro. Next month, the 12 members of the European Union Austria,
Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy,
Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain take the final leap
and make the euro their new hard currency of choice. Euro notes
will come in seven denominations: 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500.
The currency has eight coins: 1 cent, 2 cent, 5 cent, 10 cent, 20
cent, 50 cent, 1 euro and 2 euro. For information and country time
lines for conversion of old currencies, go to www.europa.eu.int/euro.
