Social media is fast becoming the messenger of choice per a recent study commissioned by Sheraton Hotels & Resorts. Among the results of the survey of 4,204 people in the U.S., U.K. and China are the following.

80% access social networking sites throughout the day

68% say they aren't always honest on social networking sites

62% use social media to stay in touch with family and friends while traveling

59% of hiring managers have passed on candidates based on their social-media profiles

54% check out a new contact's social networking profile before meeting

54% know someone who has been fired for something said or posted online

39% claim they "could not live without" social media sites

36% would rather log on than make a call to share good news

33% log on multiple times every hour
