Royal Caribbean will base the world's two largest cruise ships at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. The two 5,400-passenger Genesis ships will begin sailing from the port in 2009 and 2010, respectively. The cruise line also will pay for a $37.4 million renovation and expansion of the terminal, to be completed in fall 2009. The renovation will be financed through a $5.70 surcharge to passengers. By 2010, almost 5 million passengers are expected to pass through the port yearly, making it the largest cruise port in the world.
Cunard Line's 2,000-passenger Queen Victoria set off on its maiden voyage yesterday, following a naming ceremony featuring Camilla Parker Bowles, the Duchess of Cornwall, on Monday in Southhampton, England. The ship will cruise around the Baltic Sea for 10 days, stopping in Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Oslo, Hamburg and Bruges.
