New Orleans officials announced July 13 that they have canceled the city's bid for the 2008 Democratic National Convention. A spokesperson for the New Orleans Metropolitan Convention & Visitors Bureau said the fiduciary responsibility needed to host the convention would be too much at this time, coming a year after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. "We felt that we could not go to our corporate citizens at this moment and ask for what would be at least $70 million," said the spokesperson, who added that the city definitely would consider putting a bid in for the convention in 2012. In June, the city hosted its first citywide convention following the hurricane, for the American Library Association.
