On Monday, Pennsylvania Governor Edward
Rendell handed over a $16 million check to Philadelphia's
Pennsylvania Convention Center, the first installment of a $632
million expansion package. The initial funding will go toward
creation of the final plans and demolition of structures on land
slated for the new building. The expansion will increase the amount
of exhibit space from 440,000 square feet to 700,000 square feet,
with a scheduled (but unlikely, according to a spokesperson)
completion date of December 2008.
Construction will begin in 2006 on a
new conference center in Rimini, Italy. To be completed in 2008,
Palacongressi will have two large meeting rooms seating 5,400 and
1,600, respectively, and numerous breakout rooms.
