The American Hotel & Lodging Association's recently released comprehensive Lodging Industry Profile for year-end 2004 underscores what everyone already knows: business is booming for the lodging industry. According to the LIP, hotels grossed a profit of $113.7 billion in total sales in 2004, compared to $105.3 billion in 2003. Pre-tax profits increased to $16.7 billion in 2004, from $12.8 billion the previous year. Driving profits? The industry's ability to raise room rates due to an economic market that clearly commands it. Other facts released: The lodging industry employs 7.3 million; there are 47,598 hotel properties that make up 4.4 million rooms. Figures for year-end 2005 will be available in 2006.
