The American Sociological Association announced last week it will move its 2006 convention, expected to draw 5,000 attendees, out of San Francisco, where members of Unite HERE Local 2 still are working without a contract. "Our membership is strongly involved with social activism," said director of operations and meeting services Janet Astner, "so the situation in San Francisco was certainly problematic." Although the paperwork has yet to be finalized, Astner says the group will move next year's meeting to Montreal.
