The governor of Georgia, Sonny Perdue, signed the Georgia Smokefree Air Act 2005 on May 9, banning smoking in most public places in the state. Restaurants and bars are excluded from the new law if they do not serve or employ people under 18, and convention and conference centers that are not wholly or partially owned by the state also are exempt. The law goes into effect July 1.
