San Francisco's 199-room Hotel Vitale opens today, one of only two major local openings planned for 2005. The Joi de Vivre Hospitality property, which JDV president Chip Conley has called a "post-hip hotel," offers 1,700 square feet of meeting space and several outdoor event spaces that capitalize on the hotel's Embarcadero Waterfront environs, as well as a penthouse spa.

The Baltimore, Md., Development Corp., the agency responsible for the city's economic growth, requested on March 4 that bids be submitted for a proposed 750-room headquarters hotel for its convention center, to be managed by Hilton. The $290 million hotel, just north of Camden Yards, home of the Baltimore Orioles, is due to open in 2008. A spokesperson at the Baltimore Area Convention & Visitors Authority said the city estimated 121,500 room nights have been lost over the last thee years due to the lack of a convention headquarters hotel.
