Several Great Lakes communities and organizations are competing to take possession of the decommissioned 290-foot-long U.S. Coast Guard cutter Mackinaw. Among the entities that have expressed interest in the mothballed vessel are the city of Cheboygan, Mich.; the Great Lakes Lighthouse Association; the city of Duluth, Minn.; the village of Mackinaw City, Mich.; the Duluth [Minn.] Entertainment and Convention Center; and the Lake County [Ill.] Convention and Visitors Bureau. "We want to be kept on the short list," said Dan Russell, executive director of the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center, which includes the Great Lakes Floating Maritime Museum. "We'd add it to our fleet of historic Great Lakes ships." Final disposition of the boat will be decided by the U.S. General Services Administration.
