The old Washington Convention Center in the nation's capital will be demolished, now that the district has approved a $6 million contract for the work. The center has seen little use since the new 2.3 million-square-foot Washington Convention Center opened in March 2003. The wrecking ball will swing in the fall on the 800,000-square-foot facility; once cleared, the site temporarily will be used for parking, No announcement on the site's permanent use has been announced.
