The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission last week approved the first fare increase in eight years. Starting May 3, base fares will increase from $2 to $2.50, and the price per fifth of a mile rises from 30 cents to 40 cents. The flat fare from JFK Airport to Manhattan now will be $45, and the surcharge for taxis traveling to Newark Airport rises to $15. A new $1 rush-hour surcharge will be applied to rides taken between 4 and 8 p.m. on weekdays. On a positive note, the commission plans to equip all taxis to accept credit cards by November 2005.
