Campus eats. Event Camp's venue, the McNamara Alumni Center, is on the grounds of the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities, so the eateries nearby are decidedly casual. Stub & Herb's Bar, founded in 1939, is known for its variety of burgers (12 kinds, including a curry version), served on pretzel buns. The well-chosen beer menu is just as impressive.
Tut Tut. Order tickets now for Tutankhamun: The Golden King and the Great Pharaohs, which runs through Sept. 5 at the Science Museum of Minnesota. If tickets are scarce, there's lots more to see: a series of gardens showing changes in the Upper Mississippi River over thousands of years, tribal art, fossils as small as spores and as big as dinosaurs, and much more.
Batter up. The Minnesota Twins are in town when Event Camp is in session. At the All-Star break, they were 41-48, six and a half games behind the first-place Detroit Tigers and looking to move up in the season's second half. They'll take on the Baltimore Orioles on the 25th and the Tigers on the 26th.
Shop 'n' Play. Light rail links downtown and the airport to the mammoth Mall of America. Not a shopper? Explore the Amazing Mirror Maze or ride in the Nickelodeon Universe.
Hot spot: North of the McNamara Alumni Center is Psycho Suzi's Motor Lounge. As the website says, "Just drive until you see the giant tiki. And the hedonists." Rum is the spirit of choice here.
