Plans for Virginia Beach HQ Hotel Shot Down
by Michael C. LoweJanuary 18, 2012
Virginia Beach Mayor Will Sessoms and Vice Mayor Louis Jones have rejected plans to build a $109 million, 361-room Hyatt Regency next to the Virginia Beach Convention Center, telling the Virginian-Pilot the plan was "too much risk on the part of the city." According to the paper, Sessoms still supports the idea of a convention center hotel but said this specific plan asks too much of the city. Harmony Hospitality Inc., which owns a DoubleTree near the convention center, has proposed renovating the 292-room hotel and adding a 134-room tower if the city will spend $5 million to $10 million on a walkway connecting it to the convention center.
