Spanair Shuts Down Due to Lack of Government Funding

The Barcelona, Spain-based carrier Spanair shut down operations late Friday, following word that the regional government of Catalonia could no longer financially support the airline. The local government attributed its decision to the economic climate and European legislation concerning competition. The cash-strapped airline flew to 19 and 24 international destinations.
