The American Sociological Association Pulls Annual Meeting from Chicago
by Michael C. LoweDecember 22, 2010
The American Sociological Association announced it would relocate its annual meeting from Chicago one day before a one-day strike by workers at the Palmer House Hilton. Members of Unite Here Local 1 have been in a labor dispute with the Hilton Chicago and Palmer House Hilton since their contracts expired in August 2009. Although the hotels said their businesses have not been affected, the association is concerned with meeting in hotels where such actions are taking place. More than 5,000 attendees were expected for the conference that was scheduled for Aug. 13-16, 2011.
