The sardines circled, the kelp forest swayed, and the jellyfish drifted along like ghosts behind glass as attendees to M&C and Successful Meetings’ joint Destination California event bid farewell during the closing reception, which was held on Thursday, May 3, after hours at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The three-day event brought 32 meeting planners and 31 suppliers to the Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa for myriad meetings, site inspections, education sessions and destination activities.
The opening reception took place on Monday evening at the hotel’s outdoor event space overlooking beautiful Monterey Bay. The group reconvened the next day for breakfast and a discussion with Mike Dominguez, vice president of global sales for Loews Hotels, who took planners on a behind-the-scenes look at a hotel's budgeting process and shared how it affects negotiations with meeting planners.
Participants then headed to prescheduled, one-on-one appointments between buyers and suppliers to discuss their interests face-to-face, before enjoying a lunch sponsored by the Newport Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau and held in the domed observatory of the Sardine Factory, a repository of fresh, sustainable seafood.

Evening activities included a trip to the 139-room Carmel Valley Ranch, which is billed as a 500-acre playground nestled in Carmel Valley and offers guests a multitude of activities, such as beekeeping, al fresco yoga and guided hikes. The group took a tour of the facilities before heading to the property’s organic garden for a sunset wine reception, followed by dinner at the golf clubhouse, where long tables were set up in elegant family-style fashion, and plates of fresh veggies and steaming meats passed from attendee to attendee. As the evening drew to a close, an outdoor fire pit was ablaze, accompanied by the obligatory s’mores fixings.

On Thursday, the conference kicked off with Jeff Vredevood, director of education with Herman Miller, who gave the group some insight on how to set up meeting and education spaces to foster creative thinking, interaction and engagement. This was followed by a second round of one-on-one appointments, after which the group paused for an al fresco lunch at the 550-room Hyatt Regency Monterey.
Bellies full, attendees split off to discover what the coastal Californian town had to offer with one of three options: a wine tour, a kayak tour and a Land Rover driving experience.
