Though smaller and considerably less expensive than previous billion-dollar plans, the current blueprint for the expansion and renovation of New York City's Jacob K. Javits Convention Center seems to have the support needed to materialize. This past March, the board of the Empire State Development Corp. approved a 100,000-square-foot expansion, 40,000 square feet of which will be dedicated to exhibition space. The $463 million project also entails replacing the roof and exterior curtain wall and adding energy-saving technology, in addition to needed repairs. At press time, the proposal was pending approval from the state's Public Authority Control Board, the final hurdle before breaking ground. By 2010, a comprehensive inspection of the facility should be completed, followed by the revamp in 2013. javitscenter.com
