Meetings & Conventions: Short Cuts December 2000

December 2000
Short Cuts:BETTER YET
Leaving a Job Gracefully

When leaving a job you dislike, you might be
tempted to let off steam and tell the world what went wrong. Hold
back, says Bob Rosner, a speaker on workplace issues who offers
advice at www.workingwounded.com. A better approach:
GIVE NOTICE. Set a date (two to six weeks out)
for your departure, and offer to train and/or advise your
replacement.
BE VAGUE. Say, “I want to pursue other
interests” or “I found a job that furthers my career.”
SAY THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES. Be positive. Thank
your employers and co-workers for training, experiences or
relationships.
CLOSE ON AN UP NOTE. Background checks are a
reality. So if bad times or bad feelings are the reason for moving
on, try to salvage what you can on the way out the door.
