April 2001
Short Cuts:BETTER YET
Asking for a Raise
Sure, you could use some extra cash, and you
might actually deserve it. Why wait for your boss to come to the
same conclusion? Consider the following tactics, and point your
browser to www.careerlab.com for more tips.
Research. Find out what others in your
field earn, so you can support the numbers you bring to the
table.
Flaunt it. Be prepared to recount your major
responsibilities and accomplishments and to list your goals for the
future. Remember, this is not the time to be modest.
Time it right. If business is slow, or the
company is being reorganized, the odds of getting a larger paycheck
are against you.
Be specific. Come in with a dollar figure in
mind, and begin negotiating from there.
Show respect. Do not present your argument as
an ultimatum. Your goal is to demonstrate that you are an asset to
the team.
