Nervous about entering the work force
for the first time? According to Barbara Pachter, author of New
Rules @ Work: 79 Etiquette Tips, Tools, and Techniques to Get Ahead
and Stay Ahead (www.pachter.com), “Everyone likes working with people
who handle themselves well.” Her advice follows.
Be nice. Make an
effort to greet and chat with co-workers. Confidence and comfort
around others will follow.
Dress well. Always
wear clothing that is clean and unwrinkled. A good rule of thumb is
to model your wardrobe after successful people in the company.
Appear capable. Avoid
using inexperience as an excuse, and don’t apologize for being new.
Bosses should believe you are equal to a professional
challenge.
Overachieve. Offer to
help others and volunteer for additional assignments when
possible.
Take social situations
seriously. Mingle and converse -- without getting drunk.
Social functions are a great way to make new contacts.
