Succeeding at a First Job

Be nice. Make an effort to greet and chat with co-workers. Confidence and comfort around others will follow.

Dress well. Always wear clothing that is clean and unwrinkled. A good rule of thumb is to model your wardrobe after successful people in the company.

Appear capable. Avoid using inexperience as an excuse, and don’t apologize for being new. Bosses should believe you are equal to a professional challenge.

Overachieve. Offer to help others and volunteer for additional assignments when possible.

Take social situations seriously. Mingle and converse -- without getting drunk. Social functions are a great way to make new contacts.
