Finding time to exercise on the
road is always a challenge, but always rewarding. The following
in-room routines come from Jim Kaese, co-founder of the
Athletic-Minded Traveler (www.athleticmindedtraveler.com), and can be used when
your hotel’s facilities are lacking.
Desk-chair squats.
Pull out the chair and squat onto the edge of the seat till your
bottom touches it. Repeat 25 times. The key here is to move up and
down very slowly -- count to five going down and coming back
up.
Desk-chair incline
pushups. Using a chair that does not have wheels,
grab the two sides of the seat and stretch your feet and legs
behind you so you’re facing down and your body is at a 45-degree
angle, and do typical push-ups.
Bed sit-ups. Lying on
your back with your feet over the side of the bed and with the edge
of the mattress in the back of your knees, pull yourself up using
your abdominal muscles. Repeat 20 times.
Faux jump rope. Just
because you don’t have a rope doesn’t mean you can’t simulate the
exercise. Find a high-energy music station on the radio or
television, pretend you have a rope to jump over, and start hopping
and twirling.
