magazine rank the 100 Best Walking Cities in America (www.prevention.com/bestcities) using 14 criteria such
as walking trails, parks, safety and the ozone layer. The top seven
for 2008:
1)Cambridge,
Mass.: A college town with riverfront trails and views of
Boston
2) New York City:
Parks, trails along the Hudson and plenty to see on every
corner
3) Ann Arbor, Mich.:
Lots of open space; 8 percent of the work force walks to work
4) Chicago:
Pedestrian-friendly sidewalks and two parks on the lake
5) Washington, D.C.:
Monuments, museums, wooded trails and the Mall
6) San Francisco:
Environmentally aware, with a culture of hoofing it
7) Honolulu:
Concentrated cultural and retail hotspots, along with a native
enthusiasm for exercise.
